We serve an awesome God.
He is loving. He is good. He is faithful. He is wise. He is powerful.
And He is Holy.
God blessed me with a deeper understanding of this truth through a study in the book of Leviticus.
To be holy is to be entirely perfect. It means to be perfectly just and good. It means to be free from sin.
Let’s be honest. It’s His faithfulness, goodness, and love that make us feel good. I’ve sent up a lot of praises to God for his faithfulness. I’ve praised Him for his love and compassion. But I’ve definitely fallen short in praising Him for His holiness.
Because when I think of the holiness of God, it reminds me of my own short-coming. The call from God to “be holy; for I am holy” (Leviticus 11:44) is a tall order. It was God’s holiness that required Him to turn away from His son when He took our sins upon himself on the cross. It’s why He can’t fellowship with me when I have sin in my life. God’s holiness sets him apart as God. He is the only One who is truly and perfectly holy.
And this, too, deserves our praise.
It is because He is Holy that we can believe the promises in His word. Because He is Holy He cannot sin. It is because of His holiness that we can know He is good, and faithful, and loving.
We can go to Him for rest…because He is Holy. (Matthew 11:28)
We can know that His plans for us are good…because He is holy. (Jeremiah 29:11)
We can have faith that He will strengthen us and help us…because he is holy. (Isaiah 41:10)
We can rest assured he can forgive and cleanse us…because He is holy. (1 John 1:9)
We can have hope in the promise of Heaven…because He is holy. (John 14:2-3)
He is perfectly good because He is holy.
He is perfectly loving because He is holy.
He is perfectly faithful because He is holy.
Anyone can make a promise. But knowing that God is holy, that he is entirely perfect and without sin, means that I can have perfect and complete faith in the promises He has made to me.
