Jochebed delivered her third child, Moses, during a time in Egypt when, by the king's command, all the baby boys were to be killed at the time of their delivery. But instead of following this command out of fear, Jochebed is known to have sheltered and protected her child from death. We can learn from this lady by looking at what she saw in her child that motivated her to fight for him.
“And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi. And the woman conceived, and bare a son: and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.” Exodus 2:1-2
Jochebed first had faith. When she saw her newborn child for the first time, she saw him as a “goodly” child, meaning he was beautiful and well-favored. Like Jochebed, as mothers, we should see our children and the miracles given to us through God as beautiful and well-favored. Seeing Moses as well-favored meant that she knew God loved him, indicating the potential Jochebed saw in her son. This was an inspired thought from God. It was not that Jochebed saw his beauty, but she saw him through the eye of faith. So, where did this faith come from? Romans 10:17 tells us that "faith cometh by hearing," so Jochebed must have heard from God as she looked upon her child.
Moms should also see our children through the eye of faith, viewing them as the miracles they are and realizing their beauty and potential in that God has big plans for each of their lives. Do we look at our children through the eye of faith? Do we see our children as "goodly" children? When the Lord gave our family Madelyn, she was the first baby born of Jonathan and me. We wept that night as we sat in our hospital room alone after her delivery, and we begged the Lord to make something mighty of her life as we did each of our children.
Raising children is a battle. We all get distracted by our schedules, but we must daily be determined to fight for our “goodly child” through the eye of faith and by listening to the voice of God.
Jochebed could have been put to death for hiding Moses and going against the king’s commandment, but she was willing to fight for her child as she saw the potential he had in the work of God. What if Jochebed had not listened to that voice of God and hadn't risked her life for her child? Moses eventually became the leader and pastor of the Israelites. He, through God, was the deliverer of God’s chosen people from bondage.
You may wonder how the Lord can use your child in such a mighty way as this, but Moses was not born into a prominent tribe of Israel. At this time, the most notable tribes were Reuben, Judah, Joseph, and Benjamin. However, obscurity is not a hindrance to being used by God.
“He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much.” Luke 16:10
So, moms, we must pray each morning to see our children through the eye of faith and fight for their potential in God's work. We must put on our fighting attire each day for our children. We must fight for them on our knees in prayer. God has a perfect plan for their life. May we all fight to see our children live their lives to the fullest potential for Him.
